Equity markets worldwide rose for a fourth month, a rout in technology shares was erased and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index reached a record in May as economic growth picked up and tensions between Ukraine and Russia eased.
The MSCI All-Country World Index jumped 1.8% and touched the highest level in more than six years. Emerging markets led gains in stocks as benchmark indexes in India, Russia, Hungary and Argentina jumped at least 8%. The S&P 500 added 2.1% as investors returned to technology stocks and sent Apple Inc. shares up 7.3%.
Forecasts for a rebound in U.S. growth in the second quarter and stimulus from central banks in Japan and Europe, along with higher-than-estimated corporate earnings, helped send the value of global shares to a record $64 trillion. Russia has pulled back most of its troops from the border with Ukraine, a U.S. defense official said on May 30, as government forces continued a campaign to wipe out separatist rebels.
“The market to some extent has built up expectations for a strong second half of the year,” Jim Russell, a senior equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management, which oversees $120 billion, said by phone from Minneapolis. “Many people entered May with Russia on their minds and with sluggish economic indicators on their minds, and it really hasn’t turned out that way.”

The Department of Defense awarded Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL ) a sizable "foreign military sales contract" on Monday.
Rockwell will upgrade a total of three Boeing (NYSE: BA ) KC-135R aerial refueling tankers for the French Air Force under a $44.5 million firm-fixed-price contract, installing the KC-135 Global Air Traffic Management Block 40 Upgrade for the airplanes. Work on the contract will be completed by Nov. 10, 2015.

The configuration described in DSCA's notification to Congress does not appear to be configured for ground attack, however. According to the notice, the French drones would be powered by Honeywell (NYSE: HON ) turboprop engines, be equipped with Raytheon's (NYSE: RTN ) AN/DAS-1 Multi-Spectral Targeting Systems and AN/APX-119 (or KIV-119) international friend-or-foe transponders, and also ARC-210 radio systems from Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL ) , but no mention is made of any munitions, or pylons for attaching them to the planes, being sold to France.

United Technologies (NYSE: UTX ) shares are also following manufacturing downward, losing 0.2% of their value. As a conglomerate, UTC is more insulated from such poor reports than more focused companies like Alcoa. Still, UTC could be in for some trouble if manufacturing is contracting, though less because of global concerns and more because of budget cuts. The company operates a sizable defense business through its Sikorsky subsidiary, and with the Pentagon looking to slash its budget by hundreds of millions of dollars over the coming decade, UTC will almost certainly take some hits from sequestration. Sikorsky's well-known Blackhawk helicopter will prevent UTC's subsidiary from being seriously crippled by cuts, but don't expect the company to emerge unscathed.
