While you can consider hybrid debt funds to manage your short term goals, you should focus on equity funds to fulfill your long term targets, Rustagi said.
Here is the edited transcript of the interview on CNBC-TV18.
Q: I can invest Rs 20,000 per month. I require Rs 5 lakh in the next three years and Rs 30 lakh in the next 20 years for child education. I also require Rs 35 lakh for my child's marriage and Rs 1 crore for retirement after 30 years. Right now, I have invested Rs 5 lakh in the stock market and mutual funds. I have around Rs 1.80 lakh by way of mutual funds. How should I allocate the money?
A: Clearly, you have taken the right steps to begin with. For example, you have defined your goal and you know exactly how much is the time horizon for each of your goals. Also, you have set some targets which are the first steps to start financial planning.
Your short term goal, which is three years away, is not long enough for you to make your portfolio very aggressive. In fact, I would also say that the portfolio for each of the goals has to be separate. Don't make a mistake of having one combined portfolio because as you yourself mentioned, the time horizon for each of these goals is different. So try and make individual portfolio for each of these goals so you can keep track of it and you will know exactly which direction your portfolio is going.
Coming back to this three year goal, since you don't have long enough time horizon, you need to focus on options, which are not very aggressive. At best, you can look at some debt oriented hybrid funds. Typically, in this category, you have monthly income plans, where you can opt for growth options or asset allocation plan.
MIPs typically invest around 80-85% in debt and the rest is invested in equity. Some of the fund that you can consider here are Reliance MIP or DSP Blackrock MIP. In the asset allocation space, you can consider IDFC asset allocation fund.
For your long term goals, your focus has to be on beating inflation and earn a positive real rate of return which is gross return minus inflation. Your focus has to be on equity funds. You already have some of the equity funds in the portfolio. You already have around five ELSS and four open ended funds.
Considering your current investment, I think you have far too many funds. You need to reduce the number of funds. Remember that most likely if DTC is implemented from April 1 next year, ELSS schemes will cease to exist. So whenever you complete three years in those ELSS funds, try and exit from there and reinvest that money in some of the existing funds.
In your existing portfolio, you can retain HDFC Top 200 . You can also retain SBI Magnum Emerging Business Fund . From the other two funds that you have - Reliance Growth and Reliance Natural Resources, I would say opt for a fund like Reliance Top 200 . As a combination, that will be good. Since you have to invest some more money for your other goals, maybe you can add one or two funds and that should suffice for your portfolio.

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Trading stocks that trigger major breakouts can lead to massive profits. Once a stock trends to a new high, or takes out a prior overhead resistance point, then it's free to find new buyers and momentum players that can ultimately push the stock significantly higher. One example of a successful breakout trade I flagged recently was trucking player YRC Worldwide (YRCW), which I featured in Dec. 12's "5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar" at $9.71 share. I mentioned in that piece that shares of YRCW had recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $7.06, $7.20 and $7.44 a share. Following that bottom, shares of YRCW were starting to reverse its downtrend and enter a new uptrend, since the stock was moving higher from its low of $7.06 to its recent high of $10.50 a share. That move was quickly pushing shares of YRCW within range of triggering a major breakout trade above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.63 to $10.87 a share. Guess what happened? Shares of YRCW triggered that breakout the following trading session with monster upside volume. This stock has continued to uptrend and soar higher since taking out those key resistance levels with bullish upside volume flows. Shares of YRCW tagged a recent high on Dec. 23 of $20.58 a share. That represents a massive gain of over 100% in just a few weeks for anyone who bought this breakout. As you can see, trading breakouts that trigger with strong volume can produce monster profits in very short timeframes. The company primarily offers anhydrous ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate solutions. Its customers for fertilizer products include dealers, national farm retail chains, and distributors. 5. Terra Nitrogen Company The nitrogen fertilizer MLPs were easily the worst performing MLP category, with Terra Nitrogen Company (NYSE: TNH) rounding out the five worst performers of 2013 — down 33 percent for the year. Based on the past year’s distributions, the annualized yield is 11.5 percent but, as with CVR Partners, this yield is expected to decline because of continuing weakness in the nitrogen fertilizer market. (Follow Robert Rapier on Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook.) - [By Robert Rapier] While the MLP space is dominated by the oil and gas sector, in last week’s article we began to explore some of the more exotic master limited partnership offerings. This week we continue our exploration of nontraditional MLPs by looking at the partnerships supplying fertilizer.
Rentech (Nasdaq: RTK) has been around for more than a decade, and it has shifted strategies several times. Full disclosure: Rentech’s Chief Technology Officer Harold Wright is a former manager of mine when we were both at ConocoPhillips, and I have visited Rentech’s facility in Commerce City, Colorado.
For most of Rentech’s existence, the company has sought to commercialize alternative fuels. At one time it had ambitions to build a large co! al-to-liquids (CTL) plant, but federal legislation ultimately nudged it instead into the biomass-to-liquids (BTL) space. The company did build a BTL demonstration plant, but ultimately shut it down and has now refocused its effor ts on becoming “one of the largest wood processing companies in the world.”
During its interesting journey as a company, Rentech acquired two ammonia nitrogen fertilizer facilities, which turned out to be a profit center that funded the alternative energy research. In November 2011, Rentech spun off this fertilizer business into an MLP called Rentech Nitrogen Partners LP (NYSE: RNF).
In the months leading to the spin-off, RTK’s market capitalization was about $200 million. Rentech maintained 60 percent ownership of RNF, and three months after the spin-off RTK’s market cap had risen to $400 million, while investors had bid RNF up to $1 billion. Interestingly, RTK’s share of RNF was worth more than RTK’s entire market cap, a situation that persists. The market currently values Rentech at $482 million, while the valuation of Rentech Nitrogen Partners makes RTK’s 60 percent stake in RNF worth slightly more than $600 million — another illu - [By Alex Planes]
The exception, Terra Nitrogen (NYSE: TNH ) , is a master limited partnership that operates under somewhat different accounting rules. No other major fertilizer company trades as cheaply as CF, and the company is presently paying out just 18% of its free cash flow in dividends. There's a lot of room to boost that payout, which is currently good enough for a tiny 0.9% yield after the pop. - [By Rick Munarriz]
Terra Nitrogen (NYSE: TNH ) is also helping things grow. The maker of nitrogen fertilizer products declared a quarterly distribution of $4.68 a unit, and that's a 29% increase over its prior disbursement. With earnings and sales improving during the first three months of the year, it's making mor! e than en! ough to cover the hefty declaration. source from Top Stocks To Buy For 2015:http://www.topstocksforum.com/top-oil-service-companies-to-own-for-2016.html

Fans of Sirius XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI ) have typically dismissed the surprising success of Clear Channel's (NASDAQOTH: CCMO ) iHeartRadio, and rightfully so. Sirius XM has been able to grow its user base every single quarter since the launch of the terrestrial radio giant's streaming app, closing out its latest quarter with more than 25 million subscribers. A common knock for iHeartRadio is that it's primarily a music platform, despite the presence of comedy channels. However, Clear Channel is making things interesting today by introducing talk content. Magnetic and sometimes polarizing radio icons Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Ryan Seacrest will be available. In an intriguing twist, you may be available, too. The new digital platform will be opened up for anyone angling to make a podcast. We'll see how this plays out with Sirius XM, which itself reports quarterly results tomorrow. Sirius XM has been able to withstand the onslaught of free streaming apps before, but as the competition broadens its offering, it may limit the pricing power of the premium satellite radio platform. Sirius XM has still gone on to hit new five-year highs this month, shaking off the challenge posed by Pandora's (NYSE: P ) growth and the upcoming rollout of Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL ) iTunes Radio. Given Sirius XM's scalable model and high fixed costs, every incremental subscriber is worth more than the one that came before. Slow growth is fine. Stalling or potentially going backwards is something else entirely. Investors may want to monitor the success that iHeartRadio has here. The ability to tune into hundreds of terrestrial stations online was a novelty at first, but the application raised its game two years ago by introducing Pandora-like music discovery features. It's the same platform that Apple is gunning for with iTunes Radio later this year. Now iHeartRadio is becoming more like the talk radio that many associate with the listenership experience. Sirius XM still has its proprietary content that's worthy of a premium, but it can't ignore the changing marketplace. You don't need digital radio to retire rich The best investing approach is to choose great companies and stick with them for the long term.
