Top Stocks To Watch For 2018

Warren Buffett has remained quiet, despite being the largest Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) shareholder. Why so quiet? I feel he likely doesn't agree with WFC's practices (or doesn't care), but what's he really to do? He can't sell, and buying isn't a sound idea - this isn't a generational buying opportunity for WFC.

Buffett won't be riding to the rescue of anything soon, but there's only a handful of companies with large enough market caps that he can invest in these days. At the same time, Buffett has been taken to task in the past over his ethical decisions (read: a large investment in sugary drink maker Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO), his trailer park business, the Sokol-Lubrizol days, etc.)

    Data source: Silicon Laboratories.

What happened with Silicon Labs this quarter? Revenue was above the high end of guidance provided in late January, which called for a range of $196 million to $202 million. On an adjusted (non-GAAP) basis, which excludes items like equity compensation and acquisition costs, net income was $38.3 million, or $0.87 per share -- also above guidance for adjusted earnings per share of between $0.73 and $0.79. IoT revenue grew 17% year over year to $103 million. Infrastructure revenue jumped 37% year over year to $49 million. Broadcast revenue declined 3% to $36 million. Access revenue fell 6% to $17 million. Subsequent to the end of the quarter, on April 18, 2018, Silicon Labs closed its $240 million acquisition of Sigma Designs' (NASDAQ:SIGM) Z-Wave business. Silicon Labs had initially agreed to acquire all of Sigma Designs this past December for $282 million, but amended the deal last quarter to include only its Z-Wave business after certain closing conditions weren't met. In any case, the purchase significantly expands Silicon Labs' position in mesh networking for smart homes. What management had to say

Terrarosa reports that Trump has an option regarding gasoline prices that he may not realize he has. Under the same 2015 legislation that allows the President to control the export of crude oil, the chief executive has the power to force domestic petroleum refiners including Valero Energy Corp. (VLO) and Phillips 66 Co. (PSX) to reduce gasoline exports on the grounds that those sales are forcing U.S. consumers to pay more at home.

U.K. Names Imperial Professor Jonathan Haskel to BOE Rate Panel

Jonathan Haskel, a professor of economics at Imperial College Business School, will join the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee in September, the Treasury said Thursday.

Haskel will replace replace Ian McCafferty, known for voting for tighter policy. Haskel will be appointed for a three-year term, which will start on Sept. 1, according to the Treasury. He has expertise in productivity growth, and received his PhD from the London School of Economics.

“I am delighted to welcome Jonathan Haskel to the Monetary Policy Committee and am very much looking forward to working with him,” BOE Governor Mark Carney said in a statement. “His broad academic experience and the depth of his knowledge on productivity and innovation will be hugely valuable to the Committee.”

The appointment may undercut the BOE’s diversity goals. The central bank has been trying to increase the number of women in high-profile roles. With just one female rate-setter currently, Haskel’s appointment could be seen as a missed opportunity.

Four women and one man were shortlisted for the interview.
