The last few weeks have been, shall we say "interesting" for maritime shipping stocks like FreeSeas Inc. (NASDAQ:FREE), DryShips Inc. (NASDAQ:DRYS), and NewLead Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:NEWL). The strong rise in the Baltic Dry Index - the average daily charter rate of a dr! y goods v! essel - since mid-August (and really since early June) has meant maritime shippers can charge more for their services, and who knows? Maybe they can even turn a profit sometime in the foreseeable future. As a result of that possibility, DRYS gained nearly 100% in a little over a month., NEWL was up as much as 70% at one point in late September, and FREE advanced nearly 300% on the heels of the Baltic Dry Index's runup from 1000 to more than 2000 in just a little over a month.

LONDON -- The price of gold bounced around last week, ranging between $1,366 and $1,395 per ounce. However, by the end of the week, little had changed, and gold for immediate delivery ended the week 0.4% higher at $1,387 per ounce.

Of course, the only practical way for most private investors to invest in gold is through exchange-traded funds. The largest gold ETF, the $51 billion SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) , ended the week 0.73% higher at $134.43, while London-listed Gold Bullion Securities (LSE: GBS  ) edged up 0.53% to end the week at $133.93. So far this year, shareholders of Gold Bullion Securities have seen the value of their holdings fall by 15.2%, while the value of SPDR Gold Trust shares has fallen by 17.6%.

Gold's big movers
Several miners made gains last week, outperforming the price of gold. Although these companies may not have issued major updates last week, their above-average performance suggests that investors may believe they have been discounted too heavily following recent falls in the price of gold.

Advisors' Opinion:

Before we hit the Dow losers, let's look at this week's best-performing component: Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) . After being one of the biggest losers for two weeks, with the stock declining 0.42%, shares of Caterpillar rose 6.12% this past week. Many analysts have contributed Caterpillar's rising share price with rising gold prices this week. As concerns about inflation creep into investors' minds, gold is seen as a safe haven and a shield against losing buying power, and increasing precious-metal prices help mining companies and mining equipment manufacturers such as Caterpillar. But despite a strong one-week performance, shares of Caterpillar are still down 2.72% year to date.

When it comes to Canadian oil sands, there has been one direction that many a company has followed: toward the exit. Tough economics, as well as a lack of sufficient takeaway capacity, has made oil sands production difficult for oil companies. But where so many other companies see peril, ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) see opportunity. Exxon has held the course on its major Kearl oil sands project and expects it to be up and running in 2015. Also, Schlumberger has just acquired a Canadian company that provides geochemical and fluid analysis to oil sands producers.

Monday -- X Marks the Spot: Data storage is a big part of businesses in the modern age; companies have massive amounts of information to manage and keep secure. Xyratex (XRTX) may not be a household name, but it is well-known to corporate IT departments seeking enterprise data storage solutions. Xyratex reports on Monday afternoon. It's seen better days, and analysts predict it will report a sharp drop in revenue. However, Xyratex has been able to beat Wall Street's profit targets with ease over the past four quarters. Tuesday -- Big Banking's Big Close Up: It's going to be a roll call of the "too big to fail" banking behemoths as they step up for their quarterly results. Wells Fargo (WFC) and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) kick things off on Tuesday. That will be followed by Bank of America (BAC) on Wednesday. Citigroup (C) and Goldman Sachs (GS) step up on Thursday. These are interesting times for the financial services providers. Interest rates are starting to move higher, and that may get in the way of demand for mortgages, but it will also help improve the chances that customers open and fund savings and checking accounts. Wednesday -- Tracking Trains: Railroads may seem like yesterday's mode of transportation, but rail remains a viable way to get goods moving across the country. CSX (CSX) reports on Wednesday. The provider of rail, intermodal, and rail-to-truck transload services and solutions has been shipping goods for 185 years. It offers coverage through every major metropolitan market in the eastern United States. Analysts see revenue inching up by 3 percent, with CSX's profit of $0.42 a share besting the $0.40 a share it posted a year earlier. CSX will

To explore and produce, a great investment is required in tools, and one of the leading equipment suppliers is Schlumberger (SLB). A key to remaining on top of the industry is innovation, and of that the company has a whole load. Throughout 2014 alone, the firm has introduced a microseismic surface acquisition system, a new fracturing technique for unconventional reserves, launched a degradable alloy technology to improve well productivity, a multilayer bed boundary detection service for clastic and carbonate fields, and a rotary steerable system that increases directional control and drilling efficiency. These product introductions have been done during the first quarter of 2014, making a strong statement about the company research and development pipeline. Gurus, however, mostly dropped the stock during the end of 2013. Let us see whether you can take advantage of the dumping and take a large position with long-term prospects.

    Another angle
Without taking hindsight issue with that statement, I'm forced to compare it to the assessment of the same subject on the same day by Schlumberger's (NYSE: SLB  ) CEO Paal Kibsgaard, who observed during his company's call that "... the main concern in North America land remains the pricing, where the downwards trend in drilling, wireline, and coiled tubing seen in the fourth quarter continued in Q1. In addition, we also saw further downward pricing pressure on a number of hydraulic fracturing bids during the quarter, adding further uncertainty to the North America land market outlook."

In January 2011, the Company acquired the OvaMed GmbH License.

TSO

TSO is the microscopic eggs of a parasitic helminth, or worm, that is found in pigs. In September 2011, the Company filed an Investigational New Drug Application (IND) with t he United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and it initiated a single dose, dose escalation study in patients with Crohns in February 2012. The Phase 1 clinical trial was a multi-center, sequential dose-escalation, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the primary objective of which was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of TSO. The trial enrolled 36 patients with Crohns ranging in age from 20 to 54 with an equal distribution of male and female patients in three single dose cohorts of orally administered 500, 2500 and 7500 ova. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Fox Rubin]

Biopharmaceutical firm Coronado Biosciences Inc.(CNDO) said a recent pilot study found that the first five patients using its potential autism treatment showed statistically significant separation from placebo, in favor of the drug. The treatment was also well-tolerated. The study is still ongoing. Shares jumped 26% to $2.25 premarket.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 biopharmaceutical player that's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Coronado Biosciences (CNDO), which is focused on novel immunotherapy biologic agents for autoimmune diseases and cancer. This stock has been hit hard by the bears in 2013, with shares off by 43%.

If you take a look at the chart for Coronado Biosciences, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong since it double bottomed in November, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.25 to its intraday high of $2.58 a share. During that uptrend, shares of CNDO have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of CNDO within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for ! long-bias! ed trades in CNDO if it manages to break out above some key overhead resistance at $2.70 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.97 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CNDO will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from October that started near $7 a share. Some possible upside targets if CNDO gets into that gap with volume are $4 to $5 a share.

Traders can look to buy CNDO off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right around some key near-term support at $2 a share. One can also buy CNDO off strength once it takes out $2.70 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

We think KMB will be perceived as the safest of the multinationals. In general, its risk to the most volatile currencies is below average (its exposure to Eastern Europe is less than 2% of sales), though it is still translating results in Venezuela (about 3% of sales and profit) at the official rate of 6.3 VEF/$ (the parallel rate just hit 175 VEF/$) and Argentina (also 3% of sales) may devalue again. Svanblar/Shutterstock A common antimicrobial agent called triclosan causes liver fibrosis and cancer in laboratory mice through mechanisms also relevant to humans, researchers at the University of California, San Di! ego School of Medicine have found Triclosan's broad use in consumer goods -- including liquid hand soaps, toothpastes, shampoos, cosmetics, plastics, yoga mats, cutting boards and ice cream scoops -- presents "a very real risk of liver toxicity for people, as it does in mice," said Robert H. Tukey, a UC-San Diego professor and co-author of the study, published Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Triclosan, a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibacterial chemical, is coming under fire because of its links to endocrine disruption that could cause infertility, impaired muscle function and now increased cancer risks. It's All Around The UC-San Diego study showed that mice exposed to triclosan for six months (roughly equivalent to 18 human years) had more and larger chemical-induced liver tumors than mice not exposed to the antimicrobial. Researchers believe triclosan may interfere with the protein responsible for detoxifying foreign chemicals in the body, thereby causing liver cells to proliferate and, over time, become cancerous tumors. Studies have found traces of triclosan in 97 percent of breast milk samples from lactating women and in the urine of nearly 75 percent of people tested, according to a statement by UC San Diego Health System. Triclosan is also one of the seven most frequently detected compounds in streams across the United States, the statement says. "We could reduce most human and environmental exposures by eliminating uses of triclosan that are high-volume, but of low-benefit, such as inclusion in liquid hand soaps," said Bruce D. Hammock, professor at University of California, Davis. "Yet we could also for now retain uses shown to have health value -- as in toothpaste, where the amount used is small." Colgate-P

Hot Energy Companies To Buy For 2014

As a value investor, one of my top rules comes from a quote by Warren Buffett warning investors not to buy into hype: "Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful."

Following this advice, its time to dig deep to find value in today's bull market. EvenThe Economistfeatured a cover this week with a menacinggolden bull charging through a concrete wall with the words "Wall Street is back".

To find long-term value in surging markets sometimes its best to dive into the discount bin. In the video below, energy analysts Joel South and Taylor Muckerman look into the lagging energy sector to find a rare gem in Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN  ) . This exploration and production company is tradingsignificantlyunder its net asset value as the market continues to punish energy producers who hold significant natural gas assets in addition to oil sandsacreage.

With natural gas spot prices moving higher, in addition to Devon's 12%-20% oil growth this year, Devon presents a unique value proposition. In addition, the company has an incredible balance sheet which offers investors a safe haven while the company grows its liquids production over the long term.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Lee Jackson]

New Source Energy Partner L.P. (NYSE: NSLP) is definitely a name for investors interested in yield. While the company faced some issues in the second quarter due to flooding in some of its drilling areas, production is back to normal and management is very positive for the remainder of 2013. Oppenheimer has a $23 price objective, while the consensus is at $24. Investors are paid a stellar 11% distribution.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

New Source Energy Partners (NYSE: NSLP) debuted in February 2013 as the year’s first initial public offering of an upstream master limited partnership, with an initial enterprise value (EV) of $186 million. The partnership is engaged in the development and production of liquids-rich conventional resource reservoirs in east-central Oklahoma.

  • [By Robert Rapier] There were a half a dozen initial public offerings (IPOs) by master limited partnerships in the first half of the year, and all but one are now in the green while one has nearly doubled in value.

The first MLP IPO of 2013 debuted on Jan. 15. USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC), which I mentioned in last week’s issue, provides compression services for the oil and gas industry. Units have advanced 36 percent since the IPO, and at the current price yield 7.3 percent.

The day after the USA Compression Partners IPO, CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR) made its debut.  CVRR was spun off from CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), and both companies remain majority-owned by Carl Icahn. CVR Refining’s primary assets are two refineries located in Kansas and Oklahoma with a combined processing capacity of approximately 185,000 barrels per day (bpd). These refineries are strategically located near the major Cushing, Oklahoma shipment and storage hub, with easy access to discounted feedstock from the nearby Permian basin, as well as the Bakken shale and Canadian oil sands.

But refiners have struggled with diminished margins in 2013 because of a much lower Brent-WTI differential. After the recently concluded second quarter, CVRR declared a distribution of $1.35 per unit, bringing its per-unit distributions for the first half of the year to $2.93. At the same time, CVR Refining lowered its annual distribution target to a range of $4.10 to $4.80 per unit. This was lower than the outlook issued in March, when it foresaw annual distributions of $5.50 to $6.50. CVRR units slid on the news, and are presently trading slightly below the $25 IPO price. The lower end of the revised forecast implies distributions of $1.17 per unit in the second half of the year, for a forward annualized yield of 10 percent based on the recent $23.50 unit price.

SunCoke Energy Partners (NYSE: SXCP) was the third IPO to debut during a very busy third week of January. SXCP is the first M

Oil and gas explorer Newfield Exploration (NYSE: NFX  ) lost 6.3% Thursday after its quarterly earnings also failed to impress investors. In sharp contrast to PulteGroup, however, profits actually fell by nearly 40% in the quarter due to lower gas volumes. Newfield's profitability has fluctuated wildly over the years: The company lost $542 million in 2009, then made more than $1 billion in the combined years of 2010 and 2011, only to lose nearly $1.2 billion in 2012. It's not a very predictable business, and shareholders suffered for that today.

  • [By Victor Selva]

Competitors such as Sandridge Energy Inc. (SD), Penn Virginia Corp. (PVA), Newfield Exploration Co. (NFX) also have a negative ROE. An alternative could be Cabot Oil &Gas Corp. (COG), Range Resources Corp. (RRC), SM Energy Co. (SM), Pioneer Natural Resources Co. (PXD) or Whiting Petroleum Corp (WLL), Berry Petroleum Co. (BRY), but for investors searching for a higher ratio, Continental Resources Inc. (CLR) will be the best option.

Oil and gas producers face many risks, with weather being one that could really impact a company's results if it's focused on just one play. This is where a producer likeNewfield Exploration (NYSE: NFX  ) , for example, can have a leg up on more focused producers. Newfield, which operates in four major U.S. basins, including the Bakken, can move its capital around if it runs into issues with the weather or prices. The plan this year is to spend about 16% of its capex budget on the Bakken, which will produce 25% oil production growth year over year. The flexibility of working in multiple basins has enabled Newfield to work around weather and infrastructure challenges in the Bakken to grow its overall oil and natural gas liquids production by 39% this year.

  • [By Lee Jackson]

Newfield Exploration Co. (NYSE: NFX) is a smaller E&P looking to rise in stature. It was recently listed by Goldman Sachs as one of the 40 cheapest stocks to buy. It is expected to spend $1.5 billion this year in an effort to increase capacity and production. The consensus price target for the stock is set at $32. A move to the target price would be a 35% gain for investors.

Integrated oil companies seem to have finally come out of the shadows. With a world economy on the rebound after the 2007/8 crisis, demand for oil began to climb again. However, as the activity slowdown affected some companies more than others, emerging market trends are expected to do so. For example, Europe has been the hardest hit region with respect to the oil & gas industry, and continues to slowly recover, in North America the gas boom reached its zenith and activities began to move offshore in the search for oil. For Eni (E) has been a troubled road since 2008, reflected by a deep decline on its s! tock face! value. Although performance has been somewhat stable, stock value never recovered pre-crisis levels and gurus have not been very active on the stock. Can something different be expected from this integrated oil producer?

Can Zynga Overcome Its Greatest Threat?

Mobile gaming trouble-hive Zynga (NASDAQ: ZNGA  ) reports earnings this week that will hopefully appease investors' and analysts' long-running concerns. As of the last earnings statement, the company was facing headwinds in the customer retention department, while the C-suite had to install a revolving door. The biggest question on Thursday afternoon may not be whether the company is in the black or red, but rather the focus will be on stabilizing its user base, the stickiness of its games, and whether its efforts at online gambling are progressing at a rate that can salvage the company.

Crash cart
Last April, Zynga was able to deliver a profit to investors that doubled as an earnings beat, along with a healthy-looking bump in EBITDA (up 66% over the prior year's number). Though revenue dipped, investors seemed encouraged that a turnaround was in store.

One glaring issue, though, was its user retention. For that quarter, daily active users hit 52 million, a drop of more than 10 million year over year. Monthly active users dropped 50 million to 250 million. These numbers represented a record low -- a scary thought for a company that went public only a year before.

Since then, the biggest piece of news out of the company was founder and CEO Mark Pincus' abdication, which sent shares rightfully higher. Pincus, though undoubtedly a smart and capable founder, was not a great CEO. He is, however, staying on as chairman and chief product officer. A more concerning executive exit was that of Dan Porter, the creator of Draw Something and a high-profile member of the Zynga team following the $180 million acquisition of OMG POP! (Porter's company). That Pincus-driven buyout has since been written down to nearly nothing on the balance sheet.

So what should investors expect come Friday, as well as further down the road?

One small loss today, one big threat for tomorrow
In April's earnings release, management guided for a $0.03-$0.05 per share loss for the coming quarter. Disappointing, sure, but not a terrible number given the intense investments the company must make to steer the ship away from the giant iceberg that is irrelevancy.

Zynga has the online gambling venture, which admittedly has potential, along with its new CEO, former Microsoft Xbox honcho Don Mattrick. Mattrick was responsible for the Xbox's tremendous success, and before that he led an effective turnaround over at Electronic Arts. It was reported that Mattrick had wanted Microsoft to acquire Zynga a few years back.

Still, the risk here is tremendous. Zynga's development costs for games that have falling user rates are too high. We've seen it again and again, every fad game is just that: a fad. Everyone plays them until no one plays them.

Top 5 Biotech Companies To Watch For 2015

Zynga has a long road ahead of convincing not only investors and analysts that the company is worth a glance, but gamers as well. Friday's earnings report will show some status updates, but the long-term picture for investors is far more important in this case. Do not buy just on Zynga's earnings, whether bad or good. Take the whole story into account.

Hot Tech Stocks To Buy For 2014

It's not pretty when Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) is on the wrong end of a trend, and that's exactly what's happening these days with Apple TV.

Apple may have finally gotten it right with its digital media receiver the third time around. Shrinking the size, lowering the price, and enhancing the streaming features have helped the consumer-tech giant sell millions of its portable set-top gadgets.

Still, it's not enough.

Marketing researcher Diffusion Group is out with its latest "Defining the In-Home CE and Network Ecosystem" 2013 report, and it doesn't bode well for Apple TV.

Just 14% of all broadband households own a dedicated streaming device, including Apple TV and market leader Roku's portable solutions. A larger 25% of broadband households own smart TVs, the Web-enabled high-def televisions that make a digital-media receiver a redundant purchase. Here's the scary part: Smart televisions and dedicated streaming devices accounted for 12% penetration a year earlier. In other words, smart TVs are the hot trend by more than doubling market penetration over the past year.

Sure, the same study shows that just 69% of smart TVs are actually connected to the Internet. There are a lot of people out there buying Ferraris to drive through school speed zones. That's even worse for Apple, since the next wave of adopters has already invested a premium to make sure they won't need a standalone digital-media receiver in the future.

    2. Go with a broader approach
Because the January Effect theory says that small-cap stocks tend to outperform large-cap stocks early in the year, ETFs like the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSEMKT: IWM  ) are a natural choice for those who don't feel comfortable picking individual stocks in the small-cap space. The iShares ETF tracks the popular Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks, owning more than 2,000 small-cap names and managing more than $30 billion in assets. It's among the most liquid small-cap-oriented ETFs available, and it comes with a modest expense ratio of just 0.2% annually. With names like ISIS Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ISIS  ) and Triquint Semiconductor (NASDAQ: TQNT  ) among its top holdings, the ETF has broad-based exposure to some of the top performers in the small-cap space.
